Letters from Germany

This letter was written to Fred Adler (1.3 ADLER) at Murtoa Vic., by his cousin Wilhelm Grüttner living in the town of Weisswsser a/Lahn in Saxony, Germany. It would appear that Wilhelm’s mother was a sister to Fred’s father, Gottlieb Adler (1. ADLER), who immigrated to Australia, and that contact had been maintained between the two siblings through the years. It is clear that correspondence between the family in Germany and Australia continued after Gottlieb’s death in 1891. Other siblings of Gottlieb Adler and Mrs Grüttner mentioned in the letter are Mrs Glatte and Traugott Adler (details of Traugott’s foster-daughter, Pauline, are unknown). Wilhelm is obviously expecting money to be sent from Australia. It is possible he had requested this because of the difficult economic conditions in Germany following World War 1. Because of the paper size, the letter had to be scanned in two parts (Translation by Ursula Heinicke).
This second letter was written by Wilhelm Grüttner with assistance from his son-in-law Hermann Pabel from Weißig, Saxony, Germany. Reference is made to Friedrich Adler, another sibling of Gottlieb Adler. It is not known how long this correspondence continued, but in all probability it would have ceased with Fred Adler’s death in 1936 (Translation by Ursula Heinicke).
